Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper visited Durango on Sunday to sign a new bill that seeks to address teacher shortages throughout the state.
Hickenlooper signed House Bill 17-1003, “Strategic Plan to Address Teacher Shortages,” on the rooftop obervatory of the Sitter Family Hall at Fort Lewis College.
The bill, sponsored by Rep. Barbara McLachlanm, D-Durango, and Sen. Don Coram, R-Montrose, “requires the Department of Higher Education in partnership with the Department of Education to examine recruitment, preparation and retention of teachers and to prepare a strategic plan to address teacher shortages in school districts and public schools within the state,” according to the Colorado General Assembly website.
