Grand Junction Tigers tame Durango boys lacrosse

Durango High School’s boys lacrosse team ran into a different kind of opponent Saturday.

The Grand Junction Tigers (6-3, 4-1 Mountain League) dominated start to finish in a 16-1 win against the Demons (5-4, 2-4 ML) at Walker Field in Grand Junction.

The Tigers scored their first goal 1 minute, 54 seconds into the game and quickly built a 6-0 lead.

DHS only managed one shot in the first quarter.

“We didn’t have a lot of energy right off the bus,” DHS head coach John Robinette said. “Going down quickly, we kind of never recovered. We just have to be better in all facets of the game.”

Kirk Fletcher led the way with five goals and one assist, and Marques Combs and Ben Eisenhauer each added three goals for the Tigers, with Combs adding two assists and Eisenhauer another.

DHS’ lone goal came from sophomore Kyle Robinette, and it didn’t come until the fourth quarter.

Grand Junction led 6-0 after one quarter and 10-0 at halftime. The Tigers outshot the Demons 30-6.

“They really possessed the ball and were patient on offense,” coach Robinette said. “We weren’t able to make the adjustments.”

Andrew Brown made 12 saves in goal for DHS in his first varsity start replacing Hank Muir, who moved back to his natural position on defense.

Jacob Hart had one save for Grand Junction, and Mark Hartsthron made two saves.

Durango’s next game is scheduled Friday at home against Montrose.

“We’re going to take a look at the tape and see where we broke down,” coach Robinette said. “We’re going to try and forget this one pretty quick.”
