I’m bewildered about all the Kentucky bluegrass installed at Miller Middle School. It’s not only on the football/soccer field; it’s everywhere, even places that will be impossible to mow. I thought the district was interested in sustainability, which includes water conservation.
Too bad they didn’t put in more native plants. The six-inch strip outside of the fence could have been wildflowers; wouldn’t that have been pretty. With the Animas River at 35% of normal, it was painful to watch the huge sprinklers dump water on the grass. I wonder if they could have used Dog Tuff grass instead, which uses a fraction of water?
This was a big missed opportunity to teach the students and our community how to live lightly in this increasingly arid Southwest. I’m sure the district had its reasons. Maybe it will explain its decisions. Someday, though, we may face water restrictions. What will it do then?
