Great Decisions’ discussion series starts Jan. 31

An international affairs discussion group, Great Decisions, will present a series of talks to celebrate its 15th year in Durango.

The discussions are open to the public and will be 11:45 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. every other Tuesday beginning Jan. 31 at the Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave. Presenters will provide background materials and lead discussions on eight international relations topics selected by the Foreign Policy Association.

The Foreign Policy Association has prepared a DVD and book to cover the selected topics. The DVD will be shown during one of the discussion sessions and the book is available for $25. To purchase, mail a check made out to LWVLPC and a return email address to Great Decisions, care of S. McGinness, 756 East Sixth Ave., Durango, CO 81301.

The following discussions are scheduled:

Jan. 31: “The Future of Europe” presented by Eric Nedergaard, a pilot and retired U.S. Air Force colonel.Feb. 14: “Trade and Politics” presented by Michael Todt, a clinical psychologist, former executive coach and management consultant for Fortune 500 companies, local volunteer and outdoors enthusiast.Feb. 28: “Conflict in the South China Sea” presented by Gail Harris, the first woman in the U.S. Navy to serve as an intelligence officer in combat.March 4: “Nuclear Security” presented by Ruth Almanis, a Fort Lewis College assistant professor of political science.March 28: “U.S. Foreign Policy and Petroleum” presented by Janine Fitzgerald, a Fort Lewis College professor of sociology and human services.April 11: “Latin America’s Political Pendulum” presented by Ellen and Ross Park, Great Decisions founders, retired computer and information systems professionals and world travelers.April 25: “Prospects for Afghanistan and Pakistan” presented by Dennis Aaronson, a Peace Corps volunteer and former senior instructional designer.May 9: “Saudi Arabia in Transition” presented by Katherine Burgess, a history professor and former State Department employee.For more information about the Foreign Policy Association, visit www.fpa.org.
