Great start for Fort Lewis ends with ugly final

Skyhawks score first, Mesa scores often

After 10 minutes of action in Sunday’s non-conference soccer match at Colorado Mesa, things were looking great for Fort Lewis.

Senior forward Tamino Kroeger scored his first goal of the season in the 7th minute of play to give the visiting Skyhawks a 1-0 lead, but things went south in a hurry. The Mavericks scored four goals in the next 27 minutes to take a commanding lead and cruise to a 5-1 win.

Roy Abergil and Trentin Atkin had two goals each to lead Colorado Mesa. The Mavericks (1-0-1) dominated much of the game and attempted 18 shots to the Skyhawks’ six. FLC managed only three shots on frame, zero in the second half.

Kroeger’s early strike gave the visitors a lead that didn’t last long. Four minutes later, Kevin Del Mazo tied the match for the Mavericks and the flood gates opened.

Atkin scored his first in the 24th minute, and Abergil followed with his first in the 32nd minute. Just two minutes later, Atkin buried his second goal in 10 minutes, and the rout was on.

Down 4-1 at halftime, Skyhawks goalkeeper Elliot Chadderton was pulled in favor of redshirt freshman Jack Jordan, who made some quality saves to keep it from getting ugly. Still, the offense struggled to get anything going.

Jordan finished with five saves, and Chadderton had two.

Next up for the Skyhawks (0-2) is a 2 p.m. Friday match at St. Edward’s University.
