Great Wall of China was a failure, too

As parts of our government are shut down and employees aren’t receiving paychecks, let’s ponder the issue.

A stalemate over $5 billion for a border wall, which may vastly underestimate the actual cost.

If you feel that history may be able to teach us anything, consider the effectiveness of the Great Wall of China.

Construction took hundreds of years, substantial cost and many lost their lives while building it.

The wall was meant to represent power that would put fear into the hearts of the barbarian intruders.

The Great Wall of China was a spectacular failure that did not keep the invaders out.

As a defensive strategy, some likened it to be about as useful to China as a bible on a battlefield. It can give you comfort (or placate your base), but it won’t stop the comers.

Others have thought of the Great Wall as nothing more than an ambitious project contrived by a vainglorious emperor.

Sound familiar? What else could the U.S. do with $5 billion?

Improve health care, increase jobs, minimize climate change?
