Grocers selling wine bad idea

The Durango Herald’s Sept. 2 piece, headlined “Booze on the Ballot” by Bill Roberts was spot on, especially concerning allowing grocery stores to sell wine. This proposal should be defeated.

Grocery stores here don’t do a very good job of selling groceries. Their stock is spotty, checkout lines are too long and assistance is nonexistent. They need to fix these things before branching out into any new products.

Will we save any money buying wine at the grocery instead of the liquor store? Not if beer is an example. My favorite beer is $2 less per six pack at the liquor store compared with grocery store prices on the same product. Plus at the liquor store, there are no checkout lines, except perhaps on New Year’s Eve. And there is personal service and assistance.

This ballot measure allows grocery stores to give us less for more money. No local people benefit – only large corporations.
