After reading Tim Thomas’ letter to the editor (Herald, June 2) about noise, which was then followed up by Action Line’s call for a noiseless July 4th parade (June 8), I must speak up.
Are we as American citizens to be silenced in a tirade from an individual, or furthermore this newspaper? I was under the impression that suppression evolves out of dictatorship. Are we to have a July 4th parade without a marching band, followed by no fireworks, weather-permitting? Really?
Two years ago, a late-model Mustang car was just slowly rolling down Main Avenue, well under the speed limit. All the while, this mature man on the sidewalk was holding his ears, squinting his eyes and making immature faces as if he was crying in his Maypo. His sissy behavior was clearly an overreaction.
Now, if certain people have sensitive hearing or sensitive eyesight, then they should wear the proper protection. But why is this liberal lifestyle restricting my choice or way of living or even telling me how to live while taking the fun out of living.
All major cities have their hustle and bustle daily form of life. If it’s peace and serenity you seek, then relocate to the suburbs.
Should we silence our train’s whistle or our diesel work train’s loud horn? Ridiculous. People need to grow up.
