Gun range came first; keep it where it is

On June 21, the Herald ran a front-page story involving the gun range in Bodo Industrial Park. About 150 people had signed a petition to have the range closed or moved. I want to remind the public that the gun range has been there far longer than the animal shelter, Walmart or the Animas River Trail. Why should the gun range move to accommodate newer institutions? This reminds me of people who buy a house near an airport, then complain about the noise of the airplanes! The community needs a safe place for law enforcement and gun owners to practice. The range is close to the Durango Police Department and La Plata County Sheriff offices, as well as other security staff who serve throughout this community. I appreciate the gun range and the opportunity it lends our law enforcement and security personnel. If ever your life depends upon the accuracy of a peace officer, you will be happy he or she had a chance to practice their aim! Keep the gun range where it is – if for no other reason than it was here first!
