When I read the story about the gun range, I had to double-check the date (Herald, June 21). It wasn’t Halloween or April Fool’s Day. How did this get to be front-page news? The range is in the county in a nonresidential area. It has been there for many years – I trained there in 1981. I support the use of the range in that location. I am a gun owner, but I also believe gun owners should be trained and licensed. Law enforcement trains at that location, so it is for the public good. I am reminded of a story from the Cold War: A tank battalion was moving through a small town in West Germany one morning. A German man was standing by the road. The commander stopped and asked if the noise was bothering him. He said, “Not at all. That is the sound of freedom.” What is next for these complainers – an end to all hunting in the area? Get rid of the Durango Gunslingers? Find a worthwhile cause to campaign for, not trivial matters.
