First it was a bestselling book, and now its a documentary the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Durango is screening at 7 p.m. today.
Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide was inspired by a book of the same title by Pulitzer Prize winners Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn. It focuses on womens rights and issues around the world as well as proffering ideas for concrete ways to improve their situation.
The Seattle Times said the book will ignite a grass-roots revolution like the one that eliminated slavery.
Local Unitarians have invited Arun Lobo to speak and lead a discussion after the film. Hailing from India, she describes herself as a feminist activist and works at the United Nations.
The film runs 40 minutes a condensed version produced by the Unitarian Universalist United Nations Office from a four-hour PBS series that premiered in October. Admission is free and open to the community, and goodwill donations will be accepted to support Unitarian Universalist United Nations Office programs.
The fellowship is at 419 San Juan Drive, near Needham Elementary School.
