What was allowed to happen to demonstrators at Fassbinder Park is unforgivable. Confederate flags and “rolling coal,” and warnings were given out! (Herald, Nov. 14.)
These were citizens practicing their right to disagree. Unfortunately, over the years I have raised the question of this exact behavior on Main Avenue with City Council members only to be put off to the former police chief. He told me in no uncertain terms that this behavior was “just cruising” and he had no intention of stopping “cruising.”
This behavior is ignorant and abusive. I had hoped that the change in police leadership would begin to reflect the city that Durango is in this century. Obviously, the “good old boys will be boys” attitude is still the norm.
It’s unfortunate that the citizens of Durango have to deal with this lack of respect by the very people who are supposed to “serve and protect” us all.
