Speaking a few weeks ago after roaring Bayfield volleyball on to victory with his fellow "Rowdy Crowd" rooters, senior Preston Hardy confirmed to the Times his next basketball move: the Wolverine will become a Colorado Christian University Cougar.
"I verbally committed," Hardy said. He is set to sign with the Cougars on Wednesday.
CCU Coach Kevin Lubbers "actually watched me at a tournament this summer. Waited a little bit, gave me a call a few months later to invite me up for a visit and a tryout. I went up, played good, they offered me right there!"
Hardy is almost 6 feet 6 inches and is a center at BHS, but on a team of tall players, he could be playing more frequently away from the rim.
"Anywhere between, like, a two-guard to a four-guy inside," he said of Lubbers' vision. "I'm not going to be playing (center) because they have some big guys for that, and of course their point guard, but he said I'll be a versatile player. I'm excited for that."
Colorado Christian is an NCAA Division II team. It was one of eight squads reaching last season's National Christian College Athletic Association division I championships at Grace College in Winona Lake, Indiana.
CCU finished with a final 19-14 record.
Academically, Lubbers' team also enjoyed outstanding performance during the 2013-14 season. Five Cougars were named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches' Honors Court, recognizing juniors and seniors earning a minimum 3.2 GPA for the academic year.
Colorado Christian, after its first winning campaign in five years, also copped the NABC Team Academic Excellence Award by compiling a cumulative 3.0 or better.
"I really liked their coaching staff and the players. They all came up, introduced themselves and talked to me for quite some time.gave me a great vibe right off the bat," added Hardy, "which I was excited about. The location of the school's perfect, and it's a great school, so it's definitely a good fit for me."
