Hat trick: Win streak at 3 for FLC lacrosse

Led by Ellie Carpenter’s season-high four goals, the Fort Lewis College women’s lacrosse team pulled away for a 10-5 victory Monday over Davenport University in Grand Rapids, Mich.

With their third consecutive victory, the Skyhawks moved to 4-1. The loss for NAIA Davenport was its first this season and dropped the Panthers to 5-1.

Davenport notched a two-goal lead in the opening 14 minutes, but Carpenter put the Skyhawks on the board at 12:25, followed by Mac Harper’s game-tying goal at 9:34.

Carpenter scored the go-ahead goal at 6:55 before DU again tied the game, at 3, 31 seconds later. Carpenter and Jam Vertner then closed out the half with back-to-back goals to give FLC a 5-3 lead at intermission, and FLC outscored the hosts 5-2 in the second half to pull away for the victory.

Sara McMahon added three goals for FLC for her third hat trick in five games. McMahon leads FLC with 11 goals.

Carpenter topped the Skyhawks in goals, shots (eight, tied with McMahon), ground balls (eight) and draw controls (three). Megan Longtain added five ground balls and Carly Smoke and Rebecca Miller three apiece.

Brie Walker recorded her third win of the season after making two saves in goal in 51 minutes.

The Skyhawks took 29 shots in the game and held Davenport to 10. FLC scooped up 28 ground balls to DU’s 16, and FLC won seven of the nine draw controls.

Fort Lewis will continue its three-game road swing in Michigan at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Aquinas College.
