On colleges' radars as a prospective pole-vaulter, Bayfield senior Katie Hawkins did justice to the attention last Saturday in Ignacio, winning the event at the 2016 Abel Velasquez Invitational with a best of 8'7", and helping the Wolverines pile up a championship-winning 153 points.
Junior Emily Bauer came in second with an 8'1" clearance. Sophomore Tiarra Christensen earned first in the shot put by powering the heavy sphere 31'4" from the circle's edge, and placed fifth in the discus with a 76'5" (freshman Mikayla Barnes took fifth in the shot at 29'4").
Also in the field, freshman Tymbree Florian long-jumped 15'9" to bag BHS another individual victory.
On the track, junior Maddi Foutz scored first-place points in the 200-meter dash with her 27.92. Classmate Bridget Goddard did likewise in the 800 (2:32.71) and joined Foutz, junior Amber Johnson and sophomore Courtney Bayles to win the 4x200 relay in 1:52.96.
The 4x100 (Foutz, Bayles, junior Isis Gonzales, Florian) laid down a winning 54.12 as well towards the cause, and Florian finished third in the open 100 with a time of 13.87 seconds. Johnson was third in the 200 with her 28.61, as was junior Jade Sanders in the triple jump (29'6") with senior Tori Tate (30'3") taking second.
The 800m medley relay of freshmen Caibri Schaefer, Shaylea Freier, Olivia Keitz and Sanders placed second, to only 4A Montezuma-Cortez in a time of 2:09.60. The Wolverines' 4x400 (sophomores Bri Marr and Claudia Vega, freshman Mylee Sanders, Tate) bettered the Panthers' with a first-place 5:06.35.
Johnson took third in the 300m hurdles, clocking 54.52, then crossed eighth (19.95) in the 110 variety. Gonzales finished fourth (1:05.91) in the 400-meter dash, and junior Miranda Talbot edged out Foutz for fourth in the pole vault at 7'1". Tate and Bauer finished a close 4-5 in the long jump, covering 14'0" and 13'11" respectively.
Next for Bayfield will be tomorrow's Pine River Invitational inside Wolverine Country Stadium.
