Late turnovers were costly for the Fort Lewis College women’s basketball team against Colorado Christian on Friday in Lakewood.
Colorado Christian’s Gillian Foster made a layup with 47 seconds remaining to give her team a 66-65 win over the Skyhawks.
The Cougars proceeded to miss two free-throw attempts that would have helped ice the game, but FLC (9-7, 6-6 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) turned the ball over twice on steals by the Cougars’ Christina Whitelaw in the final 33 seconds.
“You hope you get a couple calls that forced a few of our turnovers, and we didn’t get it,” FLC head coach Jason Flores said. “The two things that were tough to overcome were they made three more free throws than we even attempted, and we had way too many turnovers.”
The Skyhawks led the Cougars (8-8, 6-6 RMAC) 50-44 with 11 minutes, 48 seconds remaining in the game. They erased a 14-point first half deficit to trail by two at halftime.
Erika Richards led FLC with 22 points on 66.7-percent shooting, while Christie Groh had a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds.
The loss snapped a two-game winning streak for the Skyhawks, who now have lost three road games in a row.
“It’s a game that we could have got if we had just taken care of the ball a little more,” Flores said.
