Playing its final round this fall in its first season ever, the Fort Lewis College Skyhawks’ women’s golf program saw improvement.
FLC improved three strokes from a 407 on Monday to a 404 on Tuesday to finish the West Texas A&M Lady Buff Stampede Invitational at La Paloma Golf Club in Amarillo, Texas, in 15th place out of 15 teams.
Jessica Thulson, a Durango High School alumna and daughter of Donna and Jeff Thulson, also improved from Monday to Tuesday. She shot an 81 on Tuesday, four strokes better than Monday’s round, to finish with a 166 and a tie for 38th place.
Newman, behind co-medalist Courtney Zietsman, won the tournament with a 590.
Hee-Leina Kim of CSU-Pueblo and Zietsman tied atop the leaderboard in first place, but Kim beat Zietsman on the third playoff hole to top the 79-player field. Kim shot 67-75–142, and Zietsman shot 72-70–142. Kim’s Day 1 67 was the low round of the tournament.
Julie Bernard of host West Texas A&M shot 71-72–143 to finish third for the runner-up Lady Buffs, who finished 14 strokes behind Newman.
Metro State (618) finished third, St. Mary’s (62) and Wayland Baptist (620) tied for fourth, CSU-Pueblo (636) finished sixth, Colorado Mesa (644) and Regis (644) tied for seventh, Adams State (650) finished ninth, Western New Mexico (661) finished 10th, Lubbock Christian (662) finished 11th, Chadron State (690) finished 12th, Colorado Christian (698) finished 13th, Oklahoma Panhandle State (778) 14th and FLC (811) 15th.
Lauren Trujillo shot 96-102–198 to finish 71st for FLC.
Lindsey Blythe shot 106-105–211 to finish 74th for FLC.
Myranda Crawford, another DHS alumna, a senior and the daughter of Michelle and Victor Crawford, shot 122-116–238 to finish 76th for FLC.
Jordyn Bonney shot 120-127–247 to finish 77th for FLC.
