We have a full complement of talents to share with you this month, and we hope that you will come up and enjoy them.
First up at the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College is The Nile Project at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. One of the tightest cross-cultural collaborations in history, the Nile Project brings together artists from the 11 Nile countries, representing more than 400 million people, to make new music that combines the rich diversity of one of the oldest places on Earth.
A panel discussion about the water issues of the Four Corners and how they may, or may not, parallel the issues of the Nile Basin will be held at 7 p.m. Monday at the concert hall and is free and open to the public.
Odin Rathnam, who’s been a soloist with the San Juan Symphony, will be joined by FLC professors Katherine Jetter and Lisa Campi Walters to present a concert of solos, duos and trios by Gliere, Beethoven, Piazzolla and more at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Roshong Recital Hall. There are no ticket sales, but a suggested donation of $15 to defray Rathnam’s travel cost is appreciated.
The Artists in Residence program is excited to bring Andy Kust, vocal coach and musical theater specialist, to present master classes Feb. 11 followed by a showcase concert at 3 p.m. Feb. 12. FLC students will perform with Kust at the piano.
At 7 p.m. Feb. 15 in Roshong, the Trebuchet Wind Trio, made up of faculty from the University of South Alabama, will present a free concert featuring works both traditional and modern, including transcriptions of music by Bach, Borodin and Bartok as well as a work commissioned by and written for the trio by contemporary composer Philip Wharton.
The James Hunter Six comes to the concert hall at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 21. A rhythm and blues singer of uncommon vitality and chops, Hunter’s buoyant spirit and magnetic stage charisma demolishes labels like “throwback” and “retro.” As the newest family member of the famed Daptone Records (America’s premier soul imprint), The James Hunter Six remain one of the hottest soul acts in the world.
During the cold weather months of January and February, Fort Lewis Choirs are spending much of their time indoors preparing intense choral music pieces to share at a Feb. 24 concert. The theme for this concert will be sacred drama – the themes found in most of the pieces are related to dramatic stories from the Bible and other traditions. The Concert Choir will present music of Mozart, Billings and William Dawson, alongside music of modern composers Colin Mawby and Jean Berger. The choir will tell the exciting story of The Conversion of Saul as well as Carissimi’s “Plorate Filii Israel” from Jephthah. The men’s choir combines to elevate the soul with a glorious “Lux Aeterna” by Brian A. Schmidt, along with an exciting piece by Jeffrey T. Horvath called “Demon in my View.” And last but not least, Hawkappella will pay tribute to recently lost talents such as David Bowie and Prince with a music set from the ’70s and ’80s. Bring the family and join the FLC choirs at 7 p.m. Feb. 24 at the concert hall for “A Mighty Smiting: Sacred Choral Drama.”
Come hear the amazing music our students are producing at the Student Honors Recital featuring those who auditioned for and were chosen to be part of this special performance at 3 p.m. Feb. 26. This concert is free and followed by a reception at which you can chat with our wonderful students.
The Artists in Residence program presents The Mirus Trio, founded in 2007, which consists of Eastman School of Music alumni; violinist Hyungi Kim, cellist Jayoung Kim and pianist Namhee Lim. The group’s name comes from the Latin word “mirus,” meaning “extraordinary,” and the trio has proven its worth by performing in the country’s most prestigious venues and various television stations. This concert features Piano trio in D Major by Beethoven, Piano Trio No.2 by Shostakovich and Café Music by Schoenfield. Come hear them at 7 p.m. Feb. 28 in Roshong.
