Health care book will begin the dialogue

Many thanks to the Durango couple who donated $1,000 for the book on fairer health care (Herald, Sept. 2).

I picked up my free copy at Maria’s Bookshop. But I was unable to read much past the prologue: “A Moral Question.” Much like the woman’s story in the prologue, my beloved sister died at the age of 45 from a treatable medical problem (urinary tract infection), because she made too much money to qualify for Medicaid, but not enough to pay the $500 per month premium for insurance.

It was hard to not recall Sarah Palin’s entreaties to keep “Obamacare death panels” from dictating health care choices to freedom-loving American citizens. How ironic that the real death panel meeting behind the closed doors of the Senate to “repeal and replace” Obamacare was derailed by Sen. John McCain (always a hero in my eyes).

There are many reasons why America does not have a reasonable and affordable health care system, but why not? Perhaps reading this book will be a platform to at least begin the dialogue.
