Few people are given the opportunity to save a life. Heart Safe La Plata is planning to present awards to a group of people who have done just that in 2017.
"We have recorded eight cardiac arrest survivals so far this year," members of the Heart Safe board wrote in a press release. "Our Public Access Defibrillation program is way ahead of the national average! Our hard work has been aiming for this for 14 years. With the proper CPR training and AEDs in good locations, we are saving lives!
At the half-time of the Fort Lewis College girls basketball game on Monday, Dec. 18, the Heart Safe La Plata Board; Medical Advisor Dr. David Hughes; and one of the survivors, Doug Close, will present these community members with well deserved recognition and awards. The game starts at 5:30 p.m.
Heart Safe will thank the Durango Community Recreation Center,, Durango Sports Center, Strater Hotel, BP America, Fort Lewis College Police Officers, Durango Police Department Officers, the La Plata County Sheriff's Officers, and everyone who was willing to use their AED in an attempt to save a life.
Some of the patients died at the hospital, "but other patients are still alive thanks to you," board members wrote.
