Heavy rain, hail in forecast for Animas Basin

National Weather Service downgrades flash-flood warning
The National Weather Service issued a flash-flood warning and a severe thunderstorm warning for the Animas Basin and the southwest San Juan Mountains. The warnings have been downgraded to a special weather warning. However, thunderstorms, including hail, have a 60% chance of hitting the area through 4 p.m. Monday.

A flash-flood warning and a severe thunderstorm warning were issued by the National Weather Service and later downgraded to a special weather statement at 11:45 a.m. Monday for the Animas Basin and the southwest San Juan Mountains.

The special weather statement said a storm that prompted the issuing of the flash-flood warning had weakened to the point that it no longer threatened life or property.

However, hailstorms remain possible with the storm, which moved over La Plata County about 11:30 a.m. Monday.

The initial flash-flood warning warned those living in the 416 Fire burn scar and drivers about debris flows from flash floods that could have hit the burn scar or blocked roads.

The Weather Service recommends anyone who encounters flooding conditions to climb to safety and not to enter flooded roads.

For Durango, the Weather Service lists a 60% chance of rain through 4 p.m. Monday, with scattered showers after 4 p.m. A chance of showers remains in the forecast through 8 p.m. Monday.

The chance of showers drops to 10 % on Tuesday, with a chance of thunderstorms coming after noon.

Wednesday also has a 10 % chance of thunderstorms after noon.
