Help sought for camp vandalism

The Durango-La Plata Crime Stoppers organization is looking for information about a church-camp burglary and vandalism that occurred over the winter.

Buildings used by the First Baptist Church as a summer camp on Red Ridge Road between Hermosa and Falls Creek – about two miles from County Road 203 – were broken into sometime from January to late March. The church was damaged, buildings were vandalized and boom box-style radios were stolen.

Investigators think the perpetrators were juveniles because of the size of the footprints found in the foam of a fire extinguisher that was sprayed in one building, Lt. Ed Phippen with the La Plata County Sheriff’s Office said last week. Phippen said “Hail Satan” was written on a door.

The crime had not been solved as of Friday afternoon. Crime Stoppers offers up to a $1,000 cash reward for information leading to arrests. Call the hotline at 247-1112, text “tipster” (274637), call the dispatch center at 385-2900 or go online at www.DurangoLaPlataCrimeStoppers.org.
