Herald editor to write blog, stories from Uganda

Maestas

The Durango Herald will bring readers stories and a blog about News Editor Amy Maestas’ work in Uganda during the next month. Maestas will travel to Kampala to work with foreign journalists at The Daily Monitor, one of the city’s largest daily newspapers.

Her travel and work are part of the International Center for Journalist’s Africa program. The goal of the program is to provide an opportunity for foreign journalists to study and become involved in journalism as it is practiced in other countries. Reporters and editors examine the role that journalists play in society and the challenges they face in doing their jobs, including introducing foreign journalists to the United States and its media, the dual nature of U.S. news media, social-media strategies, digital tools for African journalists and diversity.

In April and May, Daily Monitor journalist Dorothy Nakaweesi worked in the Herald newsroom, where she learned about multimedia projects and wrote stories about the media landscape in Uganda, about tourism in Southwest Colorado and about a local coffee company owner.

Maestas will blog – including photos and videos – about her travel throughout Uganda and her work at the Daily Monitor. She also will write news and feature stories about the country’s ongoing struggles with a free press; Ugandan small-business women who sustain and support themselves through their own type of micro-loan program; the education and rehabilitation of former child soldiers who escaped from the Lord’s Resistance Army; and more.
