Herald’s loss, county’s gain

Megan Graham, until recently associate opinion editor and member of the Herald’s editorial board, has taken a newly created job as La Plata County’s public affairs officer. It is a position for which she is highly qualified and well suited.

I expect the county will quickly come to depend on her skills, knowledge and consistently sound judgment. I did.

Megan worked at the Herald three times for a total of 11 of the last 19 years. Eight of those focused on the Opinion Page.

I do not expect her for a fourth turn. Megan’s new job perfectly fits her interests, education and experience. She has a degree from Fort Lewis in English communications, a master’s in public administration from the University of Colorado and has worked for two non-profits.

Megan is also great to work with. She’s feisty and argumentative enough to write editorials – or to call out a co-worker when he was wrong, even one who technically out-ranked her. But she also consistently demonstrated an innate kindness and respect for the job.

Plus, Megan brought a rare degree of insight to the editorial page. She has a remarkable ability to get straight to the essence of an issue. That should serve the taxpayers well.

Megan Graham has been an asset to the Herald and a pleasure to work alongside. I am proud to call her a friend.
