Heritage Society holds pie auction

Folks flock to annual cabin fever reliever

With a homemade sour cream-raisin pie fetching $90, the annual pie auction proved to be another delicious fund-raiser for the Pine River Valley Heritage Society on Saturday night.

Average bids of roughly $40 per pie sent everyone home with a smile.

And nearly $200 came in from the increasingly popular $2-a-slice offer - with many folks making pie an appetizer, not just dessert, to augment the free chili and potato soup offered.

All the proceeds from the apricot, cherry, pecan, apple and other pies go to the all-volunteer, free history museum on Pearl Street - opening up again after Memorial Day.

The valley's finest bakers filled a long table with 40 pies plus brownies and bread. That was only one of the many filled tables at the Church of Christ last Saturday night for the annul Cabin Fever banquet. Once again, the Heritage Society showed it's not just about the valley's past - but bringing present residents together after an albeit mild winter.

Community members flocked in to hear the western music and jokes of Bar-D-Wrangler Joel Racheff and the sing-song auctioneering of ace bid prompter Ron Dunavant.

Besides the pie, Amerigas donated 100 gallons of propane and other items were offered up, including gift certificates to Bayberry Market and Good Ol' Days Antiques, roundtrip tickets on the Narrow Gauge Railroad, tickets to the Bar-D-Wranglers and a hand-made wooden goblet crafted by the multi-talented auctioneer.

The Heritage Society thanks everyone who baked and bid for another great night.
