Three weeks, three conference honors to add to the crowded collection for Alex Herrera.
Herrera, the 6-9 Fort Lewis College men’s basketball center from Ignacio, picked up the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week award Monday.
Herrera won the Defensive Player of the Week award in Week 1 of the season, and he won five a season ago as a junior. This week’s honor comes a week after Herrera was named the conference’s Offensive Player of the Week.
“We don’t value individual honors as much as team success. What’s great about Alex, he only cares about team success, and that’s why he gets so many individual honors,” FLC head coach Bob Hofman said in a statement to The Durango Herald. “He is first and foremost a team player.”
In two games in Golden last week against MidAmerica Nazarene and UC-San Diego, Herrera blocked seven shots and hauled in 18 defensive rebounds. Six of those blocks came against MidAmerica Nazarene. He had 18 points, 12 rebounds to add to those blocked shots. In the two games, he averaged 14.5 points, 11.5 rebounds and 3.5 blocked shots.
Through six games this season, Herrera has game averages of 21.2 points, 11.2 rebounds and 4.83 blocks.
Herrera and the 5-1 Skyhawks will begin RMAC games at 7:30 p.m. Friday at UC-Colorado Springs.
