Herrera hits Australian hoops

IHS standout preparing for senior year at FLC by playing Down Under
Alex Herrera - in his Bobcat red - going up for a shot in 2010.

With 32 points and 18 rebounds, one couldn't have painted a prettier picture on Sunday, May 18, for former Ignacio High standout post Alex Herrera.

Not even current South West Metro teammate Jackson Pollock.

(Couldn't make that one up!)

But what - or where, or who - the heck is South West Metro?

Try a team in the Queensland Basketball League in Australia. The senior at Fort Lewis College has already started fine-tuning his destructive handiwork, producing the aforementioned numbers and four swats in the Pirates' rout of the Gold Coast Rollers 109-55.

At a second game on May 24, Herrera scored 16 more points made 11 boards at a game in Brisbane. South West Metro improved to 3-1 by downing the Northside Wizards 85-76, and have this weekend a 'bye' in Round 5 as a reward.

Herrera's impact, through three games played, has been immediate: 21.7 points per at 55.8% accuracy from the floor, 14.3 rebounds and two rejections.

23-year-old Brisbane-born guard Ryan Vines (20 ppg, 5.3 rpg, 8.5 assists per game) has to date been a strong outside complement to Herrera's inside onslaught, with 22-year-old three-point ace Michael Carlson (23 ppg, 7.3 rpg, 4.7 apg) also proving potent.

Additionally, FLC now-sophomore guard Rasmus Bach has earned a SWM roster spot, and has notched norms of 9.7 points per game and 5.3 rebounds per game in his three contests played.

With 14 points and seven rebounds versus Northside, he-along with Vines (19 pts.) and Carlson (15)-proved effective with the ex-Bobcat controlling the paint.

Trailing league-leading Cairns and second-place Brisbane entering Round 6 play, the Pirates next host the 0-4 Gladstone Port City Power (which also had a Round 5 'bye') on June 7.
