A Hesperus man was found guilty Wednesday of multiple counts of sexual assault on a child.

Edmund Peter Marx, 63, was convicted of all six felony counts against him.

Marx, wearing a suit, showed no emotion as District Judge William Herringer read each of the guilty verdicts. He is being held at the La Plata County Jail.

According to prosecutors, Marx made inappropriate sexual contact with a girl on at least three occasions, including touching her breasts, putting his hands down her pants and kissing her.

The felonies included sexual assault on a child as a pattern of abuse. The assaults occurred in early 2014 in the Hesperus area.

Marx faces a minimum of 10 years in prison.

Sentencing is set for 8 a.m. April 29 in 6th Judicial District Court.

Public defenders Sara Hildebrand and Jake Taufer argued that Marx is innocent of the charges. They said the girl gave inconsistent statements; the defendant was coerced into making a confession; the investigation was flawed; and there was a lack of evidence, including DNA, eyewitnesses and surveillance video.

His attorneys declined to comment about the verdict.

Assistant District Attorney Christian Champagne said the case was simple.

Marx gave oral and written confessions, he tried to cover up his deeds and the victim gave a detailed and consistent account of the assaults.

Champagne did not return a phone call seeking comment about the verdict.

Marx, who took the witness stand in his own defense, said he confessed after being pressured by investigators and to protect the girl from perjuring herself on the witness stand. He did so believing he’d be given probation, he said.

But he changed his mind after learning of the seriousness of the felony charges.

Four men and eight women served on the jury. They deliberated Tuesday evening and about six hours Wednesday.

The trial, which started Jan. 11, was the second for Marx. The first one ended in a mistrial.
