Hesperus man takes second at Idaho sled-dog race

Before Ryne Olson of Durango set out on the 1,000-mile Yukon Quest, another musher from La Plata County showed his prowess on a dog sled in another event.

Jesse Flory of Hesperus finished second at the Idaho Sled Dog Challenge, a 100-mile race that ran Jan. 31-Feb 1. There were 11 sled dog teams that competed, and 10 finished the race.

Laurie Warren of Council, Idaho, won in a time of 20 hours, 55 minutes. Flory took second with an eight-dog team in 28 hours, and Carleen Brehmer of Boise was third.

In the 300-mile race, four of the six racers had to drop out, but Jesse Royer of Seely Lake, Montana, won in two days, 15 hours, 4 minutes.
