Dear Herald readers,
As a part of the extensive remodel of The Durango Herald office at 1275 Main Ave., the company is adding a time capsule in the floor. Planned to be opened in 2050, the capsule should contain items relating to significant current events in La Plata County.
A bicycle sprocket seems appropriate, and the menu from last Saturday’s very successful Local First dinner that lists about two dozen local food growers and preparers. The drought can be represented by a bottle of sand from the banks of the Animas River.
The virus, a syringe and a mask.
What suggestions do readers have? Something agricultural, a representation of the significant student diversity at Fort Lewis College, the sudden popularity of Durango as an urban escape? The capsule is not large, about 12 inches by 18 inches by 10 inches deep, so items must be on the small size.
About the 2050 opening, the capsules I’ve read about seem to have lain untouched for longer periods of time. But, change is so rapid today that 29 years is easily longer than 50 or 75.
Email suggestions to letters@durangoherald.com, please. This coming Friday, Oct. 8, is the deadline. And, humor is always welcome for consideration.
When the list is complete, I’ll let you know the choices.
Thanks for your ideas.
