High? Long? A game of 4A inches

Davis jumps to another silver at the Class 4A state championships
Elise Cranny of Niwot broke the 23-year-old Colorado record of Melody Fairchild in the 3,200-meter run in 10 minutes, 17.48 seconds Friday on Day 2 of the CHSAA Class 4A Track and Field State Championships at Jefferson County Stadium in Lakewood.

A fraction of an inch kept Durango High School freshman Alli Davis from a state title.

Davis, the No. 2 seed, finished true to seed in the Class 4A girls long jump with a leap of 17 feet, 3.5 inches, her second consecutive silver medal in as many days at the Colorado High School Activities Association Class 4A Track and Field Championships.

Davis, the No. 1 seed in the high jump, finished second in Thursday’s event.

Sand Creek senior Rebecca Harris jumped 17-03.75 for the long jump victory.

“It was probably a sixteenth of an inch that she scratched on her very last jump,” said DHS head coach David McMillan, who thought her final jump was more than 18 feet if not for the scratch.

“We found out she was competing with a migraine (Thursday),” McMillan said. “She had a clear head (Friday).”

Gabi Razma took 10th for DHS in the girls long jump at 15-11.75, while Miranda Gallegos was 14th at 15-05.75 for the Demons.

Durango had four relays qualify for Saturday’s finals: The boys 4x100-meter relay qualified sixth with a time of 43.47 seconds; the boys 4x200-meter relay qualified sixth at 1:29.86; the boys 4x400-meter relay qualified sixth in 3:24.69; and the girls 4x400-meter relay qualified fifth at 4:00.48.

“We are (in the groove). It was exceptional,” McMillan said of his relay teams. “I think it tells the story of a team. The kids depend on each other.”

Also for DHS on Friday: Trent Andrews was 12th and Garrett Mulkey 18th in the boys 800-meter run in 1:59.14 and 2:04.16, respectively; and Shannon Maloney finished 16th in the girls 800 in 2 minutes, 24.58 seconds.

All of the remaining relay finals are tomorrow, and DHS still has two individual events left,.

Justin Marcum will jump in the pole vault final at 11 a.m. and is a major component of the boys relays.

Joe Crawford will take his shot in the boys 1,600-meter run.

“(Saturday) the team will be fully rested,” McMillan said. “We leave a couple hours later, so they’ll have a chance to sleep in.”
