High winds expected today; county advises not to burn

After the National Weather Service issued a wind advisory for this afternoon, La Plata County cautioned locals to avoid any burning until the winds die down.

The advisory is in effect from noon to 9 p.m. today. The wind is coming in with a cold front from the north and is expected to blow at speeds from 25 to 35 mph, with gusts up to 45 mph. Blowing dust may make visibility difficult for drivers at times.

People with respiratory illnesses and heart disease, the elderly and children are recommended to stay inside and avoid prolonged outdoor exertion because of the dust.
