Fort Lewis College student Carley Carter does a handstand Friday on a 3-D chalk painting as Cory Patterson takes her photo. The piece was created by California artist Melanie Stimmell van Latum on Thursday and Friday in front of Reed Library at the college.

Melanie Stimmell van Latum of Los Angeles works on a chalk painting commissioned by Student Union Productions to welcome new students at Fort Lewis College. Van Latum said she is using a powder pigment with water and egg whites to create the temporary mural and it should remain in good condition for a couple of weeks.
