Highway 550 between Ouray and Ridgway reopened

Closure related to police investigation

U.S. Highway 550 reopened Monday to all traffic between Ouray and Ridgway after the highway was closed for nearly three hours because of a police investigation.

Jennifer Miller, spokeswoman for the Ouray Police Department, said an incident happened about 1:30 p.m. that forced the closure of the highway at mile marker 98. The road reopened around 4:30 p.m. Monday.

Miller declined to disclose the nature of the incident under investigation. The closure was north of Red Mountain Pass, almost 75 miles north of Durango, but a route local drivers may have been taking with the busy travel week.

Traffic was rerouted on County Road 17 and County Road 23, she said.
