The Colorado Department of Transportation and contractor Main Electric will begin a lighting improvement project Monday on the U.S. Highway 550 snow shed tunnel.
The project will take place about 8 miles north of the Red Mountain Pass summit between Silverton and Ouray, from mile marker 88 to mile marker 89.
CDOT and Main Electric will remove the existing lighting and electrical circuit, replace the interior snow shed lighting and replace the associated electrical wiring for the lighting. The out-of-date system will be updated with new LED, energy-efficient lighting.
Work hours will be from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
North and southbound motorists can expect one-lane alternating traffic during work hours with minimal delays. Travelers are urged to drive with caution and be aware of traffic-control operations, project workers and equipment.
Completion is anticipated in July.
