A 29-year-old man failed to return Friday evening to Hilltop House, a halfway house, after a permitted leave.
Hilltop Director John Schmier said Ricky Perez was working at the La Plata County Humane Society Thrift Store earlier that day.
Schmier knew something was amiss when he noticed Perez’s ankle monitor sending signals from Farmington Hill.
“It was pinging right across the street from the Enterprise Rent-A-Car,” he said. “I called the facility, and he was due back in 30 minutes. I approved the staff to (report) him as an escapee at 8 p.m.”
Schmier believes Perez cut off his ankle monitor and threw it out the window of a car.
All residents housed in the facility along Avenida del Sol are convicted felons serving a community corrections sentence before fully returning to society.
Perez is serving a 30-month sentence for a domestic violence charge.
He is Hispanic, 5-feet 11-inches tall and 175 pounds with brown eyes and brown hair.
He has several distinguishing marks including a dragon head tattoo on his left arm, a snake and tribal tattoo on his chest, scars on his left and right hand, and a lightning bolt tattoo on his left ankle.
