Historic ‘Driving Tour’ to be held June 28

The La Plata County Historic Preservation Review Commission will host a day of local history June 28 at the Old Fort Lewis campus at 18683 Highway 140 in Hesperus.

The all-day event is free and will begin at 10 a.m. with presentations and lectures covering the history of the Old Fort from its inception as an Army outpost to an Indian boarding school, high school, college and finally its current incarnation as an agricultural hub of La Plata County.

Attendees can take a guided tour of the farm or any of several self-guided tours of the campus including the dairy barn, blacksmith shop, restored buildings, the horse barn and the root cellar. Comfortable shoes are recommended. All tours must be completed by 4 p.m. Please – no pets.

The speakers’ presentations will begin at 10 a.m. and will include:

  • Andrew Gulliford, Fort Lewis College history professor and chair of the HPRC.
  • Jennie Sturm of History Colorado.
  • Heather Shotton, president of FLC.
  • Roy Horvath, lifelong resident and local historian.
  • Beth Lashell, director of the Old Fort.

Lunch will be available for purchase from members of the Breen Grange as well as salads and items from the Old Fort store.
