Holcomb, Moore ski strong at cross-country nationals

Moore adjusts to new age category

Two Durango-based Nordic skiers made the trip to the 2019 Junior National Cross-Country Championships in Anchorage, Alaska.

Ruth Holcomb and Logan Moore represented the Durango Nordic Ski Club on the Rocky Mountain Nordic team.

Holcomb had the top result, as she finished 16th in the under-16 girls 5-kilometer mass start classic race in 15 minutes, 26.8 seconds. The race was won by Sun Valley’s Logan Smith in 14:42.

Holcomb added a 35th-place finish in the under-16 girls 5K individual freestyle race in 15:31.1. That event was won by Haley Brewster of Rocky Mountain Nordic. She hails from the Ski and Snowboard Club Vail team.

Moore, who medaled at last year’s junior nationals in the under-16 age category, participated in his first nationals in the under-18 age division. He finished 30th in the boys individual freestyle race at the 10K distance. He finished in 25:40.9. The race was won by Sun Valley’s Johnny Hagenbuch in 22:58.9.

Moore went on to finish 51st in the under-18 boys 10K mass start classic race in 27:56.5. Alaska’s Zanden McMullen won in 25:44.3.

Both Durango athletes competed in the sprint classic competitions but did not advance out of qualifying. Holcomb was credited with a 45th-place finish in 4:30.22. Smith again won that race in the A final with a time of 3:49.62. Moore finished 57th in 3:36.79, as Alaska’s Michael Earnhart won in 3:14.59.

Moore teamed with Aspen’s Colt Whitley and Everett Olson in the 3x3K relay event. The team’s combined time of 23:58.8 was food for 14th. Intermountain Division Junior National Ski Team won in 22:44.2. Holcomb also helped a relay team to a 15th-place finish, as she and Emma Barsness of Aspen and Ellery Hodges of Steamboat Springs finished in 31:11.2. The Intermountain Division Junior National Ski Team once again won in 29:06.2.
