A recent letter to the editors accused The Durango Herald of dishonest reportage, suggesting our hometown newspaper should agree with his views or get out of the business.
Really?
Such malevolent commentary was given an opportunity to be shared with fellow readers despite the intellectually vacuous and vulgar assault on the free press – our free press!
Clearly, the writer is uncomfortable with the Herald’s preference for objective truth, which by definition is “true whether or not you choose to believe it.”
This is akin to trusting Donald Trump’s assertion that ingestion of bleach would cure COVID-19.
As for my own perspective, several years ago, I had the honor of being the Special Sections Editor for the Herald. I enjoyed the job immensely. And while with the Herald, I read a lot of reader comments, some agreeing with the editors, some vehemently in opposition.
All of which to say, if the Herald’s editors can create both praise and ire for the same story, they and Richard Ballantine must be doing something right.
We have a homegrown newspaper we can embrace as our own. Onward and upward.
