Homeless coalition concerned about cuts

In July, the House Budget Committee passed the 2018 budget resolution which included dire cuts to programs that lift low-income individuals and families out of poverty.

As an organization that works toward the prevention of homelessness by providing a continuum of housing, integrated health care and services to improve the well-being and stability of our clients, we are particularly concerned about the cuts to Medicaid, Child Health Plan Plus, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, Temporary Assistance to Needy Families and the Earned Income and Child Tax Credits.

Budget cuts such as these give large handouts to wealthy individuals and corporations through tax cuts. The resolution also includes instructions to provide for “deficit-neutral” tax reform, meaning that Congress could choose to pay for these tax cuts by making even deeper cuts in programs that serve vulnerable populations.

Now more than ever we need our elected officials to reject any budget resolution that does not put the priorities of Coloradans at the forefront.
