Homeless man dies in Durango park

Cause of death undetermined; authorities await toxicology report

A known figure in the homeless community was found dead last week in Iris Park, near the 1100 block of Camino del Rio in central Durango.

Alfred James, 57, was found in the park’s gazebo about 9 a.m. Feb. 21, said Cmdr. Ray Shupe with the Durango Police Department.

James died alone and was discovered by another person in the park who reported him deceased, Shupe said.

No foul play is suspected, he said.

The La Plata County coroner ruled out exposure to cold weather as a cause of death, he said.

A toxicology report is expected to reveal more details about the cause of death.
