The Horse Gulch Trailhead will reopen for recreators looking to get outside for a hike or bike ride over Labor Day weekend – but only for the weekend.

Durango Parks and Recreation Assistant Director Scott McClain said the maintenance to a waterline on Eighth Avenue and East Third Street will be paused so people can access the Horse Gulch Road and Durango Mesa Connector trail.

However, the pause will begin at 5 p.m. Friday and work will resume at 7 a.m. Tuesday. The trailhead’s parking lot will remain closed through the pause.

“The parking lot will remain closed through the weekend, so it’ll just be trail access through the weekend, and (people will) still need to park somewhere else,” he said.

He said that the city still has to put the final touches on the waterline maintenance before fully reopening the trail system to the general public.

“My understanding is that next week, they’ll be completing replacing concrete and the asphalt paving on Third that had to be pulled out in order to get the water line connection in,” McClain said.

If everything goes to plan, he said, both the trailhead and the parking lot will reopen the week of Sept. 8.
