Hospital honored for organ donor efforts

San Juan Regional Medical Center has earned platinum recognition from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration for its efforts to increase organ, eye and tissue donor registrations in New Mexico’s donor registry through the Workplace Partnership for Life Hospital Organ Donation Campaign.

The WPFL campaign challenges hospitals to educate staff members, patients, visitors and communities about the critical need for organ, eye and tissue donation. The hospital worked with New Mexico Donor Services to prompt new donor registrations through awareness and registry activities.

The 2020 hospital campaign efforts added 59,662 registrations to state registries. Since its inception in 2011, the campaign has generated 552,026 registrations.

About 110,000 people are currently on the national organ transplant waiting list and more than 700 of those are on the New Mexico waiting list. Every 10 minutes, another person is added to the national organ transplant waiting list.
