BHS baseball keeps whittling down its to-do list.
When state tournament brackets were released Wednesday afternoon, the Bayfield Wolverines scratched “No. 4 seed or better” and “district tournament host” off their list: No. 3 Bayfield High School will host the District 7 postseason tournament Saturday in Bayfield.
“Everything right now is going exactly how we scripted it at the beginning of the year,” BHS head coach Tom Horton said Wednesday.
“We’ve already clipped off some preseason expectations,” he said.
Among them, BHS went undefeated in the Intermountain League, and after starting the season 3-2, responded to Horton’s challenge to win out. The Wolverines finished the regular season 17-2 and IML champions.
“I told them we could run the table, and they did. So we’re in a real good frame of mind right now. They feel like they can win,” Horton said.
First up for BHS: No. 30 Florence, 10 a.m. at Bayfield Middle School. If the Wolverines want to keep checking off line items all the way to the state championship game, they’ve got to beat the Huskies (5-14) first.
“It’s one of those things where you can’t take anybody lightly,” Horton said. “We really don’t want to overlook anybody. ... I certainly hope we can handle them.”
No. 14 Cedaredge (13-6) will play No. 19 Peak to Peak in Round 2 of Bayfield’s district tournament at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.
The winners of each game will meet for the district championship at 3 p.m. Saturday in front of the Wolverines’ home fans, playing for a spot in the eight-team, double elimination Class 3A state tournament.
