If weather conditions are a little chilly for Friday’s fourth annual Winter Bike to Work Day, at least there’ll be a heated tent awaiting the dozens of commuters expected to participate.
The city of Durango sponsors the event, which will be held from 7 to 9 a.m. in front of Durango Coffee Co., 730 Main Ave. The city’s goal is “to encourage Durango residents to get out and try a more sustainable mode of transportation by commuting by bus, carpool, walking or bicycling.”
As well as the heated tent, free coffee and tea, breakfast goodies and micro-tune ups from Velorution Cycles will be available free. Raffles for packs and other giveaways will also be held.
Last year’s event brought out 103 cyclists on a chilly morning.
The city also is promoting its Way to Go! Club, a program that awards points and rewards participants. It’s attracted 91 members since its inception Jan. 1, and they’ve commuted sustainably for 5,708 miles while saving 5,386 tons of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere, according to the city.
