Black bears were here before any of us were. At first, I had problems with them getting into our kitchen garbage. Then, I specified from our trash hauler that I wanted a bear proof can. Since then, no problem at all.
I do see bears around, but they no longer look to me for food. So my kitchen garbage is not scattered, and I have no bear problems.
I don’t see why our city and county don’t require trash collectors to furnish all customers with bear proof garbage cans. And require all to furnish “auto unlocking” cans so if some need to put their cans out the night before (such as for travel or early collection times), the garbage cans don’t have to be put out unlocked.
