How to have a perfect Durango date

Brenda Macon

Whether you already have your soul mate or you’re out on your first date here in Durango, or even if you’re flying solo, there are great options in our town for making memories.

My mother once told me that finding someone “good looking” is nice, but ultimately, you have to be able to “roll over and talk with them” in the morning. I couldn’t agree more, Mom. So how can you find out if your new friend is a one-time fling or someone you have a deep connection with? You need to find some interesting experiences to share – ones that inspire conversation so you can get to know each other better.

My husband and I go out on dates as often as we can. Finding cool things to do always inspires a meaningful dialogue later, and I often learn something new about him. For example, he loves theater but absolutely hates the music from Carmen. He positively writhed in his seat during that musical and we left early. It’s funny to me because it's really catchy music. When I want to annoy him (which is rare) I either hum the theme song or the chicken dance song. He had a poster of Matisse’s reclining nude on his dorm room wall when we first met and Matisse later became my favorite artist – then we started visiting museums together and now we enjoy all the Fauvist painters. Before I divulge too much more about the quirks of our relationship, let me just offer that these points of creative connection are more meaningful than just getting to know someone over coffee or inquiring about their favorite color or brand of outdoor gear.

We have countless restaurants and watering holes that are sure to kick off your evening with the right amount of gusto. Once you’ve had a bite to eat, head to the DAC for a double feature date night. Start by strolling through the new gallery exhibit’s opening reception for “That’s so Durango!” from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday. The exhibit features local artists who offer their visual interpretation of what makes this place what it is.

You can have a beer or a glass of wine and take it with you down the hall to the theater for the opening night of the musical “Bye Bye Birdie,” at 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 7, so the timing is perfect. This musical is about a rock ’n’ roll singer who is about to be inducted into the army. There is romance, undertones of controversy and lots of great music. After, you will have much to discuss, with a perfect foundation for exploring the depths of your special someone.
