Hurd betrayed the most vulnerable and should resign

About 30 years ago, I was principal of a Durango middle school that hosted a class for many children with disabilities. I loved them all, but one particular young man who grew on my heart had multiple disabilities starting from the cerebral palsy that destined him to a lifetime in a wheelchair.

He was unable to speak, but he could flash a happy smile that would melt even your heart. I have seen him occasionally around town, supported so strongly and lovingly by his incredible parents.

Thankfully, he did qualify for Supplement Security Income, a federal program that provides monthly benefits to people with limited income and resources who are blind, age 65 or older, or have a qualifying disability. It is a needs-based program designed to help vulnerable groups meet their basic needs for food and shelter.

Today, I ran into his father who had just learned that his son’s SSI would be cut in half --- because he didn’t have a job.

I think it’s important for you, Rep. Hurd, to truly feel and understand what so many of your constituents – that you have betrayed with your vote – are experiencing. Please resign and allow us to replace you with someone with compassion for the people you were elected to serve. I pray for you to do the right thing.
