I have written several emails to U.S. Rep. Jeff Hurd. Most centered on the extreme abuses of power exercised by this administration, and Hurd’s and his colleagues’ meek acquiescence to such abuses. To his credit, Hurd has responded to me on several occasions, and has expressed his agreement with me on nearly every issue. But it’s pretty easy to agree with a constituent in private correspondence, but without action, that agreement is pretty hollow.
Specifically, in response to my concerns of Trump’s humiliating subservience to Putin, Hurd agreed, responding “We cannot weaken our hand (and) embolden Russia …”
With regard to the acceptance of a personal gift of the Qatari jet, he responded, “I recommend that the Trump administration return the plane.”
The Constitution requires that Congress consent to such a gift. Rather than allowing Congress to meekly sit back and let it happen, he should initiate legislation for such consent and make his colleagues go on record.
In response to my urging to get the Epstein files released, he has responded, “I believe the American people deserve full transparency and accountability regarding this case … and (I) support efforts to ensure the public gets real answers …” Hurd’s signature alone on the discharge petition would bring this issue up for vote in the house to obtain release of the files.
On nearly every topic he has responded, “I am committed to conducting oversight of the executive branch.” His words are appreciated, but I’ve seen no action.
