I-70 shut near Summit County tunnel over suspicious device

SILVERTHORNE – Both directions of Interstate 70 near the Eisenhower/Johnson Memorial Tunnels were closed Saturday afternoon as a safety precaution because of a suspicious device, police said.

Colorado State Patrol Trooper Josh Lewis said a 911 caller reported an SUV traveling west contained an “explosive device” and that the vehicle has been stopped, news outlets reported.

The Jefferson County Bomb Squad is on scene and investigating the device, Denver7 reported.

The vehicle was stopped on the west side of the tunnel. Westbound lanes are shut at the east portal of the tunnel. Eastbound lanes are closed in Silverthorne, Colorado State Patrol said on Twitter.

Loveland Pass is open. Traffic delays should be expected in the area.

Colorado State Patrol said on Twitter just before 4 p.m. that once they have determined it’s safe to travel through the area, they will reopen the interstate.

“We thank you for your patience as we work through this active incident,” state police said.

No further information was immediately released.
